This is the first level of the New Power series for students that want to develop writing, speaking and listening skills at level A1. The book contains 15 units, each of which has its own theme. Each unit consists of three parts: Writing, Speaking and Listening.

The WRITING section comprises:

  • What do you know?: a short introduction to the theme of the unit
  • Presentation: a rubric and model composition with language and word-length appropriate to the level
  • Getting organised: a clear plan for the composition, and tasks which show students how to organise their writing
  • Language awareness: focuses on appropriate lexical items and grammatical points relevant to the composition
  • Getting prepared: practical help to prepare students for the final piece of writing
  • Final writing: a rubric similar to the one in the presentation asks students to produce their own letter, story, article, diary entry or email
  • How to think: asks students questions about content, language, paragraphing etc for the final writing task
  • EXTRA TOPICS: provide students with further writing practice on the theme of the unit. They include messages, accounts, postcards and notes, as well as letters, articles

The SPEAKING section:

  • Comprises pair work, group work, individual work, topics for presentations and questions for general discussion based on photographs and ideas related to the theme of the unit
  • Contains all the task types found in A1-level speaking exams

The LISTENING section:

  • Rounds off each unit with a task or tasks providing practice in the following skills: note taking, picture identification, multiple matching, multiple choice, true/false etc
  • Contains all the task types found in A1-level listening exams
